In 2015, Ljubljana received the permanent title City of Literature awarded by UNESCO to cities where literature plays a significant role. With this, Ljubljana joined a fast growing international UNESCO Cities of Literature network – currently consisting of 42 cities – and committed to promote sustainable development of literature and reading culture. The network of UNESCO Creative cities covers seven creative fields, including literature. |
The city is home to the most prominent publishing houses and other literary organisations, and many creators live and work here. It also hosts numerous literary events, book fairs and festivals. By receiving the honorary title, the city of Ljubljana pledged to maintain its cultural diversity, create inclusive job opportunities in the cultural sector, promote cultural tourism, establish international connections and provide spiritual and material conditions which would encourage creative activities. |
